If we were sharing a cup of tea and you asked me how I ended up being a Health Coach for Aging and teaching FUNctional Movement classes, I'd tell you I took a circuitous route. I know people who can draw a straight line from what they wanted to be in high school to what they are doing today. I went more for the "Follow Your Interests School of Life".
When I was 20, I attended the University of Florida. A series of ill-fated events that involved falling in love provoked me into walking and pondering, "What is the meaning of life?" While immersed in thought, I glanced down and saw a small white sign with an arrow, it said Free Yoga Class. I walked into the class and spent the next ten years studying Tantric Yoga with monks from India.
I married a fellow yogi and had two children. We lived off-grid on rural, communal farms. I attended Purdue University and studied Women's Studies, Spanish and Health. Studying and teaching Women's Studies hastened my divorce. I received a MS in Health Promotion. I studied Contact Improvisation Dance and the Trager Method, a bodywork modality that includes table and standing movement. I became a Personal Trainer. My formal education and these movement modalities inform the work I do now.
I supported myself and my children working as a Sexuality Educator for Planned Parenthood Wi. I organized vision clinics in homeless shelters, migrant camps and Senior Centers for Prevent Blindness GA and I worked as a case manager for people who were HIV+ at Aid Atlanta. In my downtime, I taught Hatha Yoga, Laughter Yoga and worked as a personal trainer.
I have found that as I've aged, I have accumulated the knowledge and skills to take excellent care of myself and the ability to teach it to others.
